IN&OUT of the BOX Exploring Emerging Technologies and Future Skills in the Creative Industries

Apresentação

The project IN&OUT of the BOX – Exploring Emerging Technologies and Futures Skills in the Creative Industries is based on the idea that the creative industries lie at the intersection of three fundamental factors for value creation in contemporary societies: intelligence, creativity, and technology. However, these three factors also represent major “black boxes” of human culture.

The IN&OUT of the BOX project aims to challenge this opacity and critically explore the transformative trends within the creative industries, with a particular focus on the new wave of Artificial Intelligence technologies.

Additionally, it seeks to examine how AI impacts skills, agency, and value creation, as well as how it challenges our notions of intelligence, creativity, and authorship. Given the growing importance of the creative industries sector, analyzing these trends contributes more broadly to understanding contemporary societies, often described as knowledge societies, creative economies, or expressions of cultural capitalism, where cultural and creative competencies play a crucial role in innovation and development.

 The IN&OUT of the BOX project aims to address the changing ecosystem of creative industries through an exploratory and hybrid methodology – observational, reflective and experimental – including practical and immersive interaction with the AI black box and an “outside the box” approach which combines critical thinking and scientific and artistic investigation.

The program of activities includes a speculative workshop with conversations, debates, and a podcast to unpack the black boxes of intelligence, creativity, and technology, as well as two experimental workshops to test agency, skills, and AI technologies in creative ecosystems. The project also includes a survey to assess the impacts of AI on the creative industries sector in terms of work organization, new professional dynamics, employment status and participation in cultural innovation systems through surveys of creative professionals, experts in AI and innovation, business representatives and unions.

Outputs

 Dissemination and impact are understood as essential dimensions of the project, which therefore has a duration of 7 months and the 4 months; support of a scholarship holder.

The objective is to raise awareness in the cultural, business and educational context of the need to anticipate skills and creative agencies for a new phase of the CCI digital ecosystem.

The project uses media with high dissemination and penetration capacity, such as podcasts and “tutorial videos”, which are also capable of reaching, at the same time, targeted audiences due to the scientific content of the podcasts and artistic authorship of the tutorials.

A dissemination strategy will include:
1) publication of articles in prestigious and indexed journals;
2) presentation of the replicable deliverables – the workshop models – in formal and informal education spaces and organizations (art schools, CCI startups and cultural associations);
3) inaugural exhibition of the artists; videos and public discussion with curator and artists;
4) other presentations proposed by the curator and/or by the artists collectively or individually;
5) online dissemination of podcasts and videos and social media management;
6) official project website.
