ICNOVA

The mission of ICNOVA – NOVA Institute of Communication is to promote and support fundamental and applied research in Communication Sciences, including all aspects and participants in the field, while fostering a close and dynamic relationship with society.

A centre with a legacy of innovation

Created in 2018, ICNOVA was ranked as a Research Unit of Excellence by the Foundation for Science and Technology in 2020.

Several of its researchers were part of two pioneering centers in Communication Studies in Portugal: the Center for Communication and Language Studies (CECL), founded in 1985, and the Media and Journalism Research Center (CIMJ), founded in 1997.

Today, ICNOVA is strongly engaged with society, and the impact of its research is measured not just in terms of its publication in high-impact journals, but also in terms of the knowledge disseminated to the non-academic community.

A three-pronged agenda

The strategic agenda (2020-2023), Media Practices: Cultural, Societal and Technological Challenges, focuses on three themes:

– Diversity, Pluralism, Inclusion;

– Cognitive, Mediation and Decision-Making Processes;

– Culture, Criticism and Digital Practices.

They all take into consideration the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set out in the in the 2030 Agenda.
